DESTINATION: MASSANUTTEN
It's not as far as you might think! Only three hours from Southern Maryland is a whole new world of rest,
relaxation and family fun. It's Massanutten, a four-season resort catering to skiers in the winter and
vacationing families in the summer.
Recently Donna and I decided it was time for a break, and while an extended vacation was in order, our
schedules only allowed for a long weekend. After searching the Internet under 'Mid-Atlantic' retreats,
we came across www.massresort.com and Massanutten Resort, near Harrisonburg, VA. I had been there about
20 years ago for a ski trip, and only assumed it was a winter destination, but the activities calendar
and amenities indicated they were about more than ice and snow, and the price was moderately perfect.
The drive to Massanutten was spectacular. From the rolling hills of Virginia leading to majestic
mountainsides and incredible panoramic views, to the quaint little towns along the way, our minds
were transformed into that of worry-free explorers anxious to reach the next curve in the road.
Condo rentals came in many styles, sizes, and prices. Some even included kitchens, saunas and Jacuzzi tubs.
Since our weekend was with romance in mind, we chose a condo with Jacuzzi. Nearly all of the accommodations
came with a spectacular view of the surrounding valley, a deck or screened porch and 5 HBO's…….we weren't
roughing it!
Activities included something for everyone in the family; horseback riding, chair-lift rides, swimming,
tennis, canoeing, hiking and a large variety of crafts and entertainment. We skipped all of that and
headed straight for the on-site spa. While I got all the kinks worked out with a very well done 1-hour
deep-tissue massage, Donna was having her own private delight with a LeStone Massage, a new technique
using a series of hot and cold stones. She said it was the best massage she'd ever had, with the exception
of the ones that I give to her.
After we had all of the relaxation we could handle for one day, it was naptime by one of three swimming
pools, then dinner. We found a brochure for Jordan Hollow Farm Inn and Restaurant located in Stanley, VA.
It took us about 40 minutes to get there from Massanutten, and it was well worth the drive. This restored,
200-year old horse farm was an oasis on the mountainside featuring a menu of American cuisine with the
best of local gardens, Virginia wines and microbreweries. Everything was homemade, down to the honey
butter and bread. Because the menu constantly changes, one could go back every day of the week and see
something different.
We headed home the next day, rested, relaxed and well fed. Our route home is the way I would recommend
to anyone heading to the Skyline Drive region, and there are plenty of antique and pottery stores along
the way. From Southern Maryland, go south on 301 into Virginia to RT 207 to I95 South. Take the Ashland
exit west on RT54 to RT33. It takes you right to Massenutten Resorts. For reservations and
information call 540-289-9441. For information on Jordan Hollow Farm Inn call 1-888-418-7000.
