Destination: Deep Creek Lake
Nothing is better for recharging your batteries than a long weekend away from it all. Recently my husband
Don celebrated his 40th birthday, my gift to him included adventure and romance, and a stay at Haley Farms
Bed & Breakfast, in Oakland, MD.
I found this particular B & B on the Internet, of course. The web address is www.haleyfarm.com, and their
phone number is 888-231-FARM. Conveniently this site is linked to some of the area attractions, including
white water rafting on the Youghiogheny River, which was one of the highlights of our trip.
Upon our arrival at Haley Farm, we were warmly greeted by the caretaker, affectionately called "Fred, just
Fred". Fred showed us to our suite, which was a very oversized room with king-sized bed, Jacuzzi tub, gas
fireplace, private bath and a bottle of chilled champagne.
The next morning, breakfast was served promptly at 9am, by none other than Fred. It was spectacular, as were
all of the breakfasts that weekend. Some of my favorites included the blueberry soufflé, fried green tomatoes
right from Fred's garden and a large variety of homemade muffins and breads.
There were many activities available including horseback riding, hiking, boating and relaxing in the
hammock or on the oversized front porch. Like I said we chose whitewater rafting with a company called
Precision Rafters. Don and I consider ourselves to be fairly intermediate rafters, having rafted more than
a dozen rivers, but doing the Youghiogheny was like a 4-hour E-ticket ride at Disney, and it wore us out.
If you're a beginner, forget this river exists. Part of the B & B package we purchased included a massage,
and let me tell you, we needed it now if we ever did.
Tradition at Haley farm is a Friday evening bonfire and cookout for all of the guests. There were 14 guests
that attended. We all introduced ourselves, talked about where we were from and enjoyed each other's company,
while Fred and his wife, Tammy, prepared some of the best fried chicken we've ever had (sorry mom).
If you're looking for a reason to get out of town, I can't think of a better time than now. The breathtaking
beauty of this region as the leaves change color and fall, make autumn the most popular time to visit. And
if you end up at Haley Farm, tell Fred, Don and Donna said "hello".
