Athenian Café
It's Friday night! After all of the decisions you've had to make during the week concerning your job,
your kids, your finances etc., you may end the week with the most important decision of all. Where to go
for dinner? This choice has the potential to ruin your weekend or start it off with a bang. The Southern
Maryland area undoubtedly has its share of Italian, Mexican and Chinese restaurants from which to choose.
You may not know that one of the most unique places to go is nestled on the outskirts of Waldorf in White
Plains Commerce Center.
The Athenian Café has been serving authentic Greek cuisine for twelve years. Chef George Vrentzos and his
wife Soula have created an establishment that is second to none. The menu is a combination of traditional
Greek entrees, steak and chicken dishes and some unique seafood creations. The variety will please anyone
in your party, even the "meat and potatoes" guy.
Athenian Café has a wide variety of appetizers to offer including; Dolmades, grape leaves stuffed with rice
and ground beef; Spanakopita, spinach and feta wrapped in phyllo dough; Saganaki, Greek cheese flambe served
with grilled pita bread; Calamari, deep-fried tender squid served with marinara sauce and zucchini sticks.
They have fabulous Greek entrees including; Souvlaki, marinated tenderloin on pita bread topped with
tzatziki sauce; Kapama, tender lamb lightly sautéed with wine, tomatoes, and spices; Kotopoulo, half a
chicken baked with lemon juice and herbs; and the ever popular Gyro, lamb and beef on pita bread topped with
tzatziki sauce. Chef George's specials include; Maryland Crabcakes, Manicotti, Chicken Shish Kabob, and
several seafood samplers.
All of the entrees are served with a Greek salad and fresh baked bread. Although the dishes prepared at The
Athenian Café are fresh and delicious, it is the opinion of several members of our team that it's worth a
visit just for the bread. This bread is fresh baked with butter, garlic and a hint of rosemary. It is
delicious!
If you like a little entertainment with dinner, visit them on a Saturday evening between 7:30 and 9:30 to
enjoy the gyrations of Zahra the belly dancer. Soula is also a welcome presence in the dining room to ensure
that your experience is a pleasant one.
The Athenian Café is open Tuesday through Friday, 11:30 to 2:00 for lunch and 5:00 to 9:00 for dinner.
